On Sunday and Monday of the Memorial Day weekend, I drove to Baraga to spend time with my son and daughter-in-law, Kevin and Jericho, as well as Jericho's family. It was great seeing them for the second time this month, especially since they live in Vermont.
One of my favorite rivers in the western U.P. is the Sturgeon River. One of these days I would like to canoe this river. Kevin accommodated me and we went for a short hike along the Sturgeon River.
Kevin and I also went kayaking in Keweenaw Bay. Here is a shot of the lighthouse located on the north side of Baraga.
Flowers are in bloom everywhere. Here is a shot of an Azalea flower.
On Monday a group of us decided to tour the Quincy Mine, located in Hancock. I took a lot of photos so the next few blog updates will include information about the mine as well as some of the photos.
The Quincy Mine is an extensive set of copper mines located near Hancock, Michigan. The mine was owned by the Quincy Mining Company and operated between 1846 and 1945, although some activities continued through the 1970s. The Quincy Mine was known as "Old Reliable," as the Quincy Mine Company paid a dividend to investors every year from 1868 through 1920.
The Quincy Mine was the deepest mine in the country. It had a vertical depth of 6, 225; the longest section was 9,260 feet.
For the tour into the mine they required hard hats and provided jackets. They took us to the 7th level where the temperature is 43 degrees. The other 80 some levels below where we were have flooded. Here is a shot of Kevin and Jericho and one of our group including Jericho's mom, Sandy, her brother, Taylor, and myself.
