Porcupine Mountains -- Post 3

This update includes the last few images from the Porcupine Mountain trip I took a couple of weekends ago with my sister, Diana. Here she is resting on a tree.



Although the beaches in the area are nice, they don't compare to the wide spans of beach in Grand Marais.



Half way between the visitor's center and Presque Isle River is the Union Mine summit. There was a copper mine here beginning in the 1840s. Currently there is an observation tower on the summit, which is 1,958 feet above sea level. This is slightly lower than the highest point in Michigan, which is Mount Arvon at 1,979 feet, Mount Arvon is located north of L'Anse. The view from Summit Peak was spectacular, with Lake Superior showing in the background.





The next three photos were taken from interpretive signs that explain the very complex geology of the Porcupine Mountain area.
