This past Saturday the official grand opening of the new professional disc golf course was held in Grand Marais. I believe this is the first regulation course installed in the upper peninsula. Congratulations go to teacher, Brian Prill, who obtained funding to install the course from the Grand Marais Chamber and the Sault Tribe of Chippewa. Kudos also go out to the students of Burt Township who contributed their time, muscle power, and energy to install the 18-hole course. Thanks to my son and daughter-in-law, Jonathan and Jessica, for taking some pictures at the event while I was working at the museum. Jonathan has been competing in sanctioned disc golf tournaments down state, and wanted to be here for the grand opening.
To get to the course, drive H48 east out of Grand Marais around four miles. Turn left (north) onto School Forest Road. A little more than a half mile down before you get to the river, look for the green and white sign that directs you to the course.
Brian is in the white and turquoise tee shirt -- giving the grand opening speech.
The course is near the old school forest building chimney. The actual structure burned down many decades ago, but the chimney remains.
Jonathan, Warren Scaife, and his baby were the first ones on the course.
The course intersects the Sucker River.
