For today's blog posting I would like to post a few pictures of new items in the museum's gift shop. I must admit that pride plays a role in this decision. Pride not for items that I have made, but for some that have been made by my son, Jonathan.
He is making these awesome table top Zen Rock Gardens. Zen gardens are intended to imitate the essence of
nature. Use
and cultivate the miniature Zen garden to reduce the day’s problems to a
pattern of sand and stone. Create or just play to still your nerves, find
calmness, and let your emotions and thoughts flow freely. Each garden comes with a hand-crafted wooden tray base, a hand-crafted cultivation rake, sifted Lake Superior sand, Lake Superior agates, and a quartz crystal. The small gardens are $35 and the larger ones are $50.
The entry way into the museum has always been a little narrow. To create a space to display the Zen gardens, increase display space, and widen the entry way area -- I built a new set of shelves.
The other new item in the gift shop are hand painted scenes from the Grand Marais area by Karen Miller. Karen and her husband have been vacationing in Grand Marais for decades. While visiting with them at their home located north of Holland, MI last fall, I saw one of Karen's paintings. I asked her if she wanted to paint a few more and sell them in the museum. She said yes and here are the first seven. The two large paintings are $150; the smaller five are $110.

The annual sea plane fly in took place in Grand Marais yesterday. Due to weather, we had fewer planes than last year. However, there were still more than a dozen planes that competed in various events. I am always working at the museum during the competition, but I hear that fun was had by all.
Some of the new break wall is now showing above water level.
