Last night my son and his wife, Jonathan and Jessica, and I went on a sunset hike from the Hurricane River to Au Sable Point. Jess had never seen the lighthouse and it was a beautiful night for a beach picnic. We carried our food in backpacks and headed down the beach going east. Today I'll post the first set of photos from the hike.
All along the beach, sections of Jacobsville Sandstone lined the beach. It is because of these sandstone shoals that reach more than a mile out into Lake Superior that the lighthouse was erected in the first place.
Nice evening...
Someone spent some time making all the cairns. Cairn is a term used to describe a man-made pile (or stack) of stones. In modern times, cairns are often erected as landmarks, a use they have had since ancient times. They have also been built as monuments, or used for defensive, hunting, ceremonial, astronomical and other purposes.
More Jacobsville sandstone...
Jonathan and Jess with some more cairns.
Jonathan -- is he walking on water or standing on some Jacobsville sandstone?
Lots of seagulls were feeding along the shore...
Boulder beach...
