Yesterday I decided to go on a long solo hike in the Grand Sable Dunes. I parked at Sable Lake, headed northwest into the center of the dunes, then northeast to the bluff over Lake Superior, and finally south back to Sable Lake. It was sunny, but windy with temperatures just above 40 degrees, so there was still a cold wind chill.
Heading up into the dunes....
The ice is melting on Sable Lake. It won't be long before the ice on the lake is totally gone....
There is almost no snow left in the dunes.....
Looking east...
During the hike I saw my first freighter of the year. The Soo Locks opened up on March 24th, but this is the first freighter I've spotted.
There is still ice on the break wall, but it is going fast....
Shelf ice....
In the photo below you can see waves breaking on shore. There are LOTS of rocks...
Looking west....
There is significant sand and silt just off shore left over from that which collected on top of the now disintegrated shelf ice....
