Marquette South Trail Hike

 Earlier this week while I was in Marquette, I went on a second hike with my friend, Helen. Our trek was on the Carpe Diem trail. It was the most twisty trail I think I have ever hiked, but it was beautiful!

The trail crosses the highway and follows a river. In the photo below you can see Marquette Mountain ski resort.

The trail had ice, slush, and mud.....

Our destination was Morgan Falls.

The final stairway was all ice, so we descended next to the steps.

From the angle where we took a break, you really could not see the frozen falls. Thanks, Helen, for another great hike!

Little Presque to Sugarloaf hike in Marquette

When I went to Marquette this week to get the review draft of the manuscript for my new book printed, I went on two hikes with my friend, Helen. The first day we used both our cars, leaving one at Sugarloaf and then driving to Little Presque. In total the hike is just under four miles, but the ruggedness and the long climb up the back side of Sugarloaf made it feel like a lot more.  However, it was an absolutely gorgeous hike.

On my drive to Marquette, I stopped at one of the rest areas to get a few pictures of the shore ice and floating ice chunks on Lake Superior.

In certain places, there were stairways and bridges, some of which were covered with ice.

When we were looking for a lunch spot, I saw these boulders. This was the spot!

When we reached the access trail to Sugarloaf, it was up, up, up from there.

I turned around and documented one of the stairways.

Finally, we made it to the top!

Walk around the neighorhood

The other day my friend, Barb, and I walked over to Mixon Road and back. I took a few photos.

The photo below was taken at the end of my driveway looking west to the Grand Sable Dunes.

I turned around and took this photo looking east.

Some of the old buildings in Grand Marais are starting to tumble in.

The roads were icy. I did wear cleats on the bottom of my boots.

We still have a foot or two of snow on the ground.
