On Saturdays in February, the Tahquamenon Falls State Park has a night-time, lantern-lit snowshoe run. A group of us from Grand Marais met up with a friend of mine from Curtis at the state park located 25 miles north of Newberry. We arrived a little after 4pm and first had a potluck picnic. Then we headed down the trail from the parking lot toward the upper falls. Thanks to Sharon for sharing some of her photos!
We brought our own snowshoes, but we were happy that the park has some for others to borrow. We were quite surprised how many people there were both during the late afternoon as well as after it turned dark for the snowshoe run. It is good to see people outside, though, rather than inside occupied by their screens.
There was a bonfire at the beginning of the trail.
We passed the intersection with the lantern trail.
Then we arrived at the first of two overlooks. I just love the long colored icicles!

After we arrived back to the parking lot to get our snowshoes, we noticed that the sky lit up with color. Sharon and I hurried back to the first overlook. She did a better job running on her snowshoes than I.
It was worth it to get pictures of the carnelian red color in the sky.
We met up with our friends and headed down the designated lantern trail.
