Winter Lake Superior beach walk and picnic

Yesterday was sunny with temperatures in the mid-20s, so my adventure friends and I decided to hike the Lake Superior beach and have a winter picnic. Sharon and Jon's fire pit was hopelessly buried in snow, but Jon was able to use a hatchet to free some of the wood. He carried the wood farther down the beach and started a nice fire. He tended the fire while the three of us women headed down the beach.

Barb, Jon, Sharon, and Jake (Barb's dog) organized our adventure ...

Then we headed west. Extreme winds have blown snow off of some of the beach, while the snow is very deep in other spots. Today we are getting freezing rain, snow, and rain -- so most likely the rocks will again be covered by winter.

Thanks, Jon, for making the fire!

Chunk of clay broken off the bluff farther west and carried by waves.

Our picnic included pork and bot choi wraps and home-made cranberry/walnut/tangerine salad.

From our picnic spot you can barely see the top of the outer harbor lighthouse. On our walk, we could not see the lighthouse at all. The photo below shows just how high the ice mound is -- around 70 feet tall. Due to recent northerly winds, the ice again extends from shore several miles.

After being on the beach for almost three hours, clouds started to head our way. We decided to go in and play euchre.

View looking west as we walked back to Sharon and Jon's house.

After cards when we were getting ready to go, Barb spotted the fox outside the house. I love fox and have not seen one in several years. It was quite dark outside already, so the photo below is the only picture I was able to get. Then Jon looked out the window and 12 deer walked right by the west side of their house. I did not get a picture of the deer since by that time it was too dark. Thanks adventure friends for a great afternoon and evening!
