Porcupine Mountains

After my sister, Diana, and I left Marquette, we continued driving to Silver City, MI, which is the gateway community to the Porcupine Mountain Wilderness State Park. We rented a cabin on Lake Superior. Although the beach was nice, it doesn't compare with the wide expansive beaches of Grand Marais. Erosion has been a problem in Silver City. The beach in front of our cabin has eroded back around 50 feet in the last several years.

Next to the cabins is the remains of an old boy scout camp.

We stopped by the visitor's center and then headed to Lake of the clouds. I got a kick out of the sign that warns you about the escarpment. The view from on top of the cliff was fabulous.

  1. Great to see some pics of the Porkies from your trip there! Those are my old stomping grounds and the beaches in Silver City are where I found my last batch of agates in August of this year. They may not be as expansive as the beaches in Grand Marais, but you can find some really neat rocks in some spots.
