View of Icebergs from the Grand Sable Dunes

To celebrate the fact that the road is now open to Sable Lake, I hiked "lake to lake" with friends, Jamey and Lois.  We parked at Sable Lake and hiked across the dunes to Lake Superior and back.  It was a beautiful sunny and warm day with little or no wind.  What a glorious hike.  In six days since we were last up in the dunes. at least 75 percent of the remaining snow melted.

We hiked the ridges....

The view from the top of the bluff was awesome.

Iceberg poop -- new rocks dumped by the melting bergs.

I could not see the freighter.  Jamey took the picture to document that there was a freighter a good distance out from shore.  There must have been some type of inversion layer that was keeping the exhaust from the freighter trapped above the lake.

Then we started to head back to Sable Lake.

Turning back north to get one last photo of Lake Superior....

Jamey checking out one of the many 100 year old telegraph poles.

Back at the still frozen Sable Lake.

  1. Enjoyed these photos. I've walked that same route many times in summer. In fact, this a.m. I walked a mile going toward Sable Falls Rd. and then drove as far as the Overlook. Did my soul good! :) Virginia
