Ghost Forest Hike

In keeping with my attempt to keep the exercise routine, I hiked yesterday in the dunes near the ghost forest. Temperatures were in the low 30s with a moderate wind. It was supposed to be sunny, but in Grand Marais we had lake effect clouds.

The hike started at Sable Lake -- then I walked across the dunes to the lake shore.

If you look close, you can see the Grand Marais break wall in the background.

This is a shot of a blow out sand bowl just south of the Grand Sable bank bluff.

Here is a shot of the bluff.

This time of year with the freezing and thawing, sections of the dunes end up with intricately carved detail.

And then there is the Ghost Forest with remnants of trees that are several thousand years old.

I walked east and followed a deer trail along the forest at the base of the dunes back to the trail that leads to the foot bridge. Here is a shot of white birches along that trail.
