Pictured Rocks Nature Trail at 12 Mile Beach

The other day Jamey, Lois, and I finally got back on the trail.  We headed over to 12 Mile Beach campground in the Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore.   We first had dinner, which included a salad made from ingredients harvested from our garden, and then we hit the trail.  This is an interpretive trail with 20 stops.  At the beginning of the two mile long trail you pick up the written trail map that describes information for each of the stop.

First, you climb up the Lake Nippising bluff.  This was the large lake that formed after the glaciers retreated for the last time.  It was much larger and deeper than Lake Superior.  I just love the moss that lines the trail...

The trail takes you through several different ecosystems.

Once we reached the top of the bluff, we noticed a few different trees that have been hit by lightning, including this mangled tree:

We noticed the plant below and have been trying to figure out what it is.  Any ideas?

Forest scenes...

Sapsucker holes...

We arrived back to the shoreline in time for sunset.

On the drive back to town we caught the moon rise over Sable Lake.
