More January 1st Snowshoe Photos

The evidence of the late December thaw can also be seen by the amount of water on top of the ice on Sable Lake, located in the Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore. Hopefully the snowmobilers will stay off the ice.

Another couple of shots of the Sable River. These photos were taken around half way between Sable Lake and Sable Falls.

As the snow has melted up in the dunes, there is now evidence of the skiers, and also us snowshoers up in the dunes.

When the snow melts quickly, there are often artistic patterns that form. Here are wide, medium, and close up views of one such patch of melting snow.

As we were cutting through the woods over near Sable Lake, we came across a downed telegraph pole. this one still had wires attached. The telegraph line went from Grand Marais to the lighthouse at Au Sable Point. The lighthouse was built in 1873 and 1874. I have been looking for records to show when the telegraph line was installed, but have not had success. It would have been quite the chore to install the line across the sand dunes.
