Wisconsin Agate Collections -- Post 2

It is not quite midnight yet, but I'm going to post tomorrow's blog update a few minutes early.  This posting will include more pictures taken during our agate collection crawl around the Stevens Point, WI area.  Thanks again to Doug for driving us around as well as to Dave, Judy, Phil, Don, Cindy, and Ray for sharing their time and treasures.

Mexican agate -- I'm not sure but most likely Coyomito...

Plume agate....

Montana moss agate......

Check out the two agate boxes below.  The first is made of Montana dryhead agate.  The second is made from Australian agates.

Do you see the laughing face in the moss agate below?

If I remember correctly, the specimen below is Mexican....

I think the next is a Fairburn agate from South Dakota...

I love the specimen below.  It is the plume without the agate.  In moss agates and plume agates, the mineral inclusions form first and the chalcedony agate fills in the extra spaces.  In the example below, the chalcedony never finished the fill.  Compare the second picture below.  This is a plume agate in which chalcedony did fill in the spaces between the plumes.

The lapidary room below is one of the best I have ever seen.

Cabs, cabs, and more cabs....

The tube agate below is one of the best I have ever seen.

I've never talked with anyone who has actually dyed an agate.  Dave soaked the one end of a gray chalcedony agate in a chemical solution for three months to dye it blue.

The Teepee Canyon agate from South Dakota pictured below is a fine specimen.

How about the banding in these agates!
